Universal was founded in 1938 by Archibald (Arty) Smedly in Washington D.C.
In 1980, the Becchinelli family purchased Universal Kennel Club. Universal Kennel Club was incorporated as Universal Kennel Club International Inc. in early 1997. The current location of Universal is in Pearl River, NY, which is about 30 minutes north of New York City.
Archibald started registering all breeds in 1938 and was the main registry for Rat Terriers in America.
Universal still is the main registry for Rat Terriers in America, registering well over 90%. Archibald also worked hard to promote many rare breeds which are accepted by most registries today. Universal now registers hundreds of breeds. See-Breed List
Universal was the main registry that strongly promoted free and open communication between it's members and a registry.
Full and strong support of it's breeders, has made Universal one of the largest registries in America.

   We have become a major service in the Pet Industry and across America. Universal's extremely rapid growth rate continues.
   We upgraded all our computer systems and we are totally and completely updated on all our applications,
   including our “Dual Application” registrations. Besides all our other registrations, Universal has registered thousands of  free Dual Registrations. Free Dual Registrations are coming in at a faster rate as each month passes. They are also coming in from all over the country and from every registry.
   Universal is again a major name in the pet and registry industry. Universal is now a very efficient, quick and top
   quality business operating smoothly to service the various needs of the pet industry.
   We are continuing our work on several very valuable projects and programs that will benefit the entire pet
